Durham University covers an area of 227.8 hectares, which includes 1 UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1 ancient monument, 5 Grade I listed buildings, 68 Grade II listed buildings and 44.9 hectares of forest. The school is divided into two campuses: the City of Durham Campus and the Queen’s Campus in Stockton. The two campuses can be accessed frequently by buses running all week long.
One of Durham’s main public attractions is the 7.3-hectare Botanical Garden, which was built in 1970 and received 78,000 visitors as of August 2007.

Durham University is a collegiate university. The college is a residential college, providing an excellent place for students to participate in social and academic activities. The colleges are not responsible for teaching; teaching is supervised by the departments. But the college not only provides accommodation for students, but also organises discos, art exhibitions, guest lectures and concerts. Each student is assigned a college tutor to help them with their studies and life.

There are approximately 130 student clubs and other organizations on the Durham campus, including various student-run organizations, interest groups, and other service organizations. These organisations are licensed by the Durham Students’ Union and most of their funding comes from the Durham Students’ Union, which represents the interests of students in their dealings with the university administration. The Durham Students Union also regularly organizes events at the Dunelm Building, including club nights such as Planet of Sound, Revolver (alternative indie rock), Twist (underground electro), and Jazz Cafe. In addition, the Durham Union runs comedy cafes, freshman dances, silent discos, and vintage fashion fairs.

Durham University has a thriving Theatre base, with a backbone society (Durham Student Theatre Association) with over 600 active members. The school’s Grand Theatre Assembly Rooms rehearse students’ works every week during the term, and it is the only venue where students’ works can be performed. “The Academy Quartet”, “Castle Worship”, “In the Summer”, “Edinburgh Fringe Festival”, and other popular shows are staged. Twenty-five theatre companies have joined the Durham Student Theatre Society and are known for producing high quality and varied plays. One of these companies has formed the Durham University Light Theatre Company, which produces four musicals a year, with a particularly popular one coming to Gala Theatre in the second semester. Since 1975, Durham University has hosted the annual Durham Drama Festival.

Music is also a popular pastime in Durham. The Durham University Chamber Choir and Orchestral Societies (including the Palatinate Orchestra) are particularly well known. The Durham Cathedral Choir offers seven scholarship programmes to Durham University students. Colleges such as University College, Hatfield College, St Chad’s College, St John’s College and Helder Peter’s College also offer organ and choir scholarships to prospective Durham students.
