UTEP awards a total of 71 undergraduate degrees, 76 master’s degrees and 20 doctoral degrees. In 2006, it was the second largest recipient of federal funding in the University of Texas system, reporting $45.7 million in research spending in 2006. From 2011 to the present, the school has spent $70 million on research, and the budget for 2012-2013 is as high as $76 million. The University of Texas at El Paso has seven colleges, each of which contains multiple undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs.

Leading research activities are taking place on campus. In November 2012, Dr. Igor C. Almeida, a professor in the School of Life Sciences, developed a vaccine for giant esophageal disease that provides a high degree of immunity. UTEP also holds a patent for the discovery by Donald E. Moss, Ph.D., of the use of methylsulfonyl fluoride as a central nervous system selective cholinesterase inhibitor for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The first clinical trial has been completed in Germany.

UTEP is one of 11 universities to receive a $5 million grant from the Carnegie Foundation.
