In 1886, the Milwaukee State Normal School opened in downtown Milwaukee with only 76 students. Over the next 42 years, the school grew rapidly and added music, humanities and other majors. In 1919, the Milwaukee State Normal School moved from downtown to the western shore of Lake Michigan. In 1937, the school changed its name to Wisconsin State Teachers College. In the 1940s, the college became one of the top teacher training colleges in the United States. In 1953, it was renamed Wisconsin-Milwaukee College. Five years later, the college merged with the University of Wisconsin. In 1956, the Wisconsin State College of Milwaukee and the extension institutions of the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee merged to form the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1971, the University of Wisconsin merged with the University of Wisconsin State System to form the University of Wisconsin System. The school became a branch of the new system. In 1994, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee became a Carnegie Foundation (doctoral/research University, extensive) institution. In the 50 years since joining the University of Wisconsin system, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has expanded to 14 schools and colleges. In 2006, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was recognized as one of the “City Saviors” by the New England Commission on Higher Education (NEBHE) for its positive contribution to the social development of the city in which it is located, and was voted by the citizens as one of the “Milwaukee” Top Ten Gems.
